What is a splint and what is it for?
The modern brace is a lightweight and durable detachable bandage for immobilizing the knee. It allows you to step on your foot, but completely eliminates movement in the joint. The lower leg and thigh are stabilized by durable metal or thick plastic plates.
A splint is prescribed in cases where it is possible to step on the leg after an injury. Typically, the period of use of the product does not exceed several weeks. If the treatment requires a longer period, it is no longer splints that are indicated, but special functional orthoses.

What is the fundamental difference between our orthopedic products and similar products from other companies?
This question is asked by patients who come to us for the first time.
Since we consider it incorrect to compare the quality of our products with the products of other specific manufacturers, we answer it as follows. How, for example, does a Mercedes differ from a Zaporozhets, despite the fact that the functional purpose of the cars of the named brands is the same? Due to the maximum correction of hallux valgus, which our insoles provided, the child was able to exert significantly less effort than usual to cope with the excessive support load. The emotional state of the child, who enjoys walking, has changed. The child really wants to learn to walk! However, without high-quality orthopedic products, the task is impossible! The baby learns to walk wearing products from our company ORTO-LUX LLC. From the first hours of using our splints, not just the quality of support changes, there is a radical change in the child’s quality of life. When the feet and ankle joints are in a functionally correct position and securely fixed, there is no need to overextend and expend strength simply to maintain an upright position. Indications for use of the splint
Splints are used in traumatology and orthopedics after injuries and surgical interventions. Less commonly, these fixatives are prescribed for spasticity in neurological patients. We list the indications for mandatory use of a splint:
- Bruise and hemarthrosis of the knee joint. The presence of blood in the joint requires the creation of rest for the leg. But foot movements are encouraged, which is what can be done in the splint.
- A tear in the patellar ligament, its tendinitis. Eliminating the load on the patella is achieved by fixing the knee in an extended position.
- Arthroscopy of the knee joint. A splint is an essential component of rehabilitation after intra-articular operations. The duration of wearing and the type of product depends on the treatment option and the damaged structure itself.
- Endoprosthetics of the knee joint. The splint is prescribed at night to prevent contracture and form a beautiful scar.
- Other surgeries in the hip and knee area.
A good splint allows for dressings and monitoring of the wound or injured area. It can be removed or put on at night without outside help. Hypoallergenic, breathable fabric increases wearing comfort, and the minimal weight does not strain the foot.
How to choose a tutor?

Most often, two types of splints are prescribed - with zero flexion in the knee joint and 20 degrees. Although the difference may seem small, the position of the knee joint after injury plays a critical role. In traumatology, it is customary to fix joints in their physiological position, and for the knee it is approximately equal to 10-20 degrees of flexion.
In a position of slight flexion, the posterior cruciate ligament, the posterior surface of the joint capsule, and the muscles of the posterior thigh relax. Therefore, the splint is 20-gr. prescribed after plastic surgery of the posterior cruciate ligament, restoration of the “harmstring” muscles, after interventions in the popliteal fossa.
A brace with a zero angle of flexion in the knee is relevant for the restoration of the anterior cruciate ligament, injuries of the patella and its ligaments, and ruptures of the quadriceps. In addition, this type of brace is needed to prevent flexion contracture of the knee joint.

Knee splint
A knee splint is one of the types of orthoses, the design of which does not have hinges. This product provides complete fixation of the knee joint to restore functionality to the affected area.

How to choose a standard tutor
If a splint for a child is made from an individual cast or from thermoplastic (turbocast), then there are no difficulties with the size. But if you need to buy a standard product, then it is important not to make mistakes in the measurements. Doing it yourself when selecting an orthosis is very risky. You should entrust the taking of the necessary measurements to a specialist.
If the child has grown, but the splint model does not need to be changed, then specialists select a new product based on measurements, guided by size tables.
Children's splint made from turbocast
Turbocast is a low-temperature thermoplastic. The material has shape memory and is the latest development in the field of manufacturing various types of fasteners. The use of turbocast splints helps to correct the position of the joints and develop the correct movement patterns.
Making such a splint takes about 30 minutes. The doctor gives the leg the required position. Heats the material above 60° C, cools it to 40° C and places it on the ankle, giving it the desired shape. During the formation of the splint, the material is very plastic, but it cools down in about 5-7 minutes.
Application of bandages
Minor ankle injuries in children do not require too rigid fixation. In this case, an elastic bandage may be prescribed. Bandages for easy fixation are made of special jersey and neoprene. Neoprene elements retain heat, accelerate blood flow, and warm the damaged area. But such an ankle brace can only be used by those who are not allergic to synthetics. Often children's sensitive skin does not like such materials.
Some types of bandages are made as an elastic bandage with Velcro ties, some have a more complex design. There are models with laces and silicone inserts that are designed to enhance compression. This ankle brace is recommended for young and experienced athletes to minimize stress.
Types of tutors
Depending on the location of the fixed zone, splints are:
- knee (can create a rigid or medium fixation, eliminating mobility in all directions or in a specific direction);
- derotational (regulate internal and external rotation, recommended for wearing by bedridden patients in the post-stroke period, after joint replacement, for fractures);
- on the ankle and foot;
- only on the ankle joint;
- hard to the knee;
- detachable for the entire leg;
- made of leather on an orthopedic last (for example, for people with different leg lengths or foot deformities).
How to put on a bandage or splint correctly
Before putting on a bandage or splint, the leg should be washed with warm water and lightly massaged. The product can be worn on a thin seamless cotton sock.
Products for easy fixation (bandages) are worn while standing, splints - in a sitting position. During treatment, warming ointments, body lotions and creams should not be used.
