Dexpanthenol: when to use and how to use

What is the mechanism of drug action

The ointment has 3 main effects. It promotes tissue healing, affects metabolism and relieves inflammation. After contact with the wound area, the active substance interacts with the main proteins, for example, albumin. The active substance is involved in processes such as carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, the formation of hormones, mediators and porphyrins. "Dexpanthenol" has a regenerative effect not only on tissues, but also on mucous membranes. The drug also helps stabilize cellular metabolism and accelerate cell mitosis. Elimination is very fast.

Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Dexpanthenol is a derivative of pantothenic acid. Pantothenic acid - a water-soluble B vitamin (vitamin B5) - is an integral part of coenzyme A. Stimulates skin regeneration, normalizes cellular metabolism, accelerates mitosis and increases the strength of collagen fibers. An increased need for pantothenic acid is observed when the skin or tissues are damaged, and its deficiency can be compensated for by the local use of dexpanthenol.

Pharmacokinetics

When applied externally, it is quickly absorbed and converted into pantothenic acid and binds to blood plasma proteins (mainly beta-globulin and albumin). The concentration of pantothenic acid in the blood is 0.5-1 mg/l, in the blood plasma - 100 μg/l.

Pantothenic acid is not metabolized in the body and is excreted unchanged by the kidneys.

Indications for use

In case of violation of the integrity of the skin: healing of burns (including sunburn), minor skin damage (abrasions, cuts, cracks, etc.). Prevention and treatment of dry skin, including as a consequence of dermatitis of various origins (manifested by peeling, redness, irritation, feeling of tightness), as well as daily care of areas of the skin exposed to the greatest influence of external factors (face, hands), including due to weathering. For caring for the mammary gland during lactation (cracks and redness of the nipples of the mammary gland), for caring for infants and infants (diaper rash, diaper dermatitis).

Pharmacological properties
Pharmacodynamics

Dexpanthenol is provitamin B5. Its action is similar to that of pantothenic acid, but it is better absorbed when applied topically. Pantothenic acid is a constituent of coenzyme A, which, in the form of coenzyme acetylCoA, plays an important role in cellular metabolism. Pantothenic acid plays an important role in the processes of acetylation and oxidation, participates in carbohydrate and fat metabolism and in the synthesis of acetylcholine. It has a pronounced effect on the formation and function of epithelial tissue. The active substance penetrates well into the affected area. Promotes regeneration of skin exposed to harsh meteorological influences. Accelerates the regeneration of damaged skin.

Pharmacokinetics

When applied topically, it is quickly absorbed and converted into pantothenic acid and binds to plasma proteins (mainly beta-globulin and albumin).

Indications for use

Mild skin damage caused by mechanical, chemical, temperature and other factors:

  • scratches, abrasions;
  • 1st degree sunburn

In children over 1 year of age - for the prevention and treatment of mild diaper dermatitis. In nursing mothers - for the prevention and treatment of cracked nipples of the mammary glands. Protecting the skin from the effects of adverse climatic factors (chapping and frostbite). Prevention and treatment of mild diaper rash in children and adults.

Directions for use and doses

The medicine is intended only for external use in children and adults. The cream is applied subcutaneously to the affected areas of the skin once or several times a day, depending on the need. To prevent and treat cracks and inflammation of the nipples after each feeding, the cream is used in the form of a compress. The duration of treatment depends on the type and course of the disease.

Use during pregnancy and lactation

Use during pregnancy is permissible if the benefits of use outweigh the potential risk to the fetus. The drug can be used during lactation (breastfeeding), but it does not need to be applied during feeding (before feeding, remove the remaining cream with a napkin and wash the nipples with water).

Precautionary measures

For external use only. Do not apply to wet wounds. Avoid getting the cream into your eyes (in case of contact, rinse your eyes with warm water). It is not recommended to apply DEXPANTHENOL E to mucous membranes. Cetostearyl alcohol and diethanolamine contained in DEXPANTHENOL E cream may cause contact dermatitis. Benzyl alcohol may cause irritation to the skin and mucous membranes. If allergic reactions occur, treatment should be discontinued. If the course of the disease worsens or new symptoms appear during treatment with DEXPANTHENOL E cream, it is recommended to consult a doctor.
