Everything about lumbar radiculitis: causes, symptoms, treatment

The popular name for lumbar radiculitis is “dacha residents’ disease”, the official name is radiculopathy. To understand the essence of the disease, you need to know how the spine works.

In the lumbar region there are nerve fibers or spinal roots. They support sensitivity and performance of the lower body. If the nerves are affected, symptoms indicating the disease occur.

back pain is the main symptom of the disease. A person affected by the disease takes positions (most often a bent position) in which the pain sensations become weaker. To get rid of symptoms, it is necessary to undergo long and persistent treatment.

With radiculopathy, it is not the musculoskeletal system that is affected, but the spinal roots. That is why diseases are classified as diseases of the nervous tissue. Drug treatment is not the same as what a doctor prescribes for back pain and is not associated with damage to nerve fibers.

Why does lumbar radiculitis develop?

The 2 main reasons for the development of the disease are inflammation or infringement of nerve tissue. The spinal roots are deformed due to:

  • With spinal injuries, in particular in the lumbar region;
  • With the presence of diseases (vertebral arthritis and spondylitis, infectious diseases, intervertebral hernia, osteochondrosis);
  • With inflammation of the muscles whose function is to support the spine;
  • With curvature of the spine.

A number of factors also worsen the patient’s situation:

  • Low physical activity;
  • Obesity;
  • Diabetes;
  • Hypothermia;
  • Unreasonably high physical loads (lifting heavy weights);
  • Reaching old age.

In the absence of these factors, the risk of developing radiculopathy is reduced.

What symptoms are characteristic of the disease?

Sharp pain, the main symptom, occurs in the lumbar region. In advanced cases, it reaches the lower part of the body: the gluteal and calf muscles, thighs, and toes. Pain sensations are specific, they can be divided into 3 groups:

  • Lumbago - attacks of sharp pain, discomfort weakens if you are at rest or take a certain position;
  • Lumbodynia – long-term persistence of dull and aching pain;
  • Lumboischialgia - the appearance of pain, tingling, numbness in the legs, temporary loss of sensation in the lower extremities.

Everyone experiences pain in the same way. Localized in an area with damaged nerves. Other symptoms accompanying pain include:

  • Increased sweating;
  • Pallor of the skin;
  • Decreased skin temperature in the nerve area;
  • Increased pain with physical activity;
  • Easing discomfort in a certain position and rest.

The attending physician diagnoses the disease based on the following signs (in addition to pain):

  • Tucked leg (left or right depending on the location of the nerve lesion);
  • Increased pain during attacks of coughing and sneezing;
  • Tight muscles in the abdominal area;
  • Restricted movements.

As the disease progresses, these signs become more pronounced. The pain becomes stronger and spreads to the lower extremities, as a result of which the person stops performing his usual work. Some patients are sent to hospital.

How to cure radiculopathy?

To cope with the disease, doctors use an integrated approach, which involves:

  • Taking medications. Drugs are prescribed to eliminate symptoms, reduce pain, relax muscle fibers, relieve inflammation, improve blood circulation;
  • Physiotherapy;
  • Surgical intervention. If drug therapy is effective, surgery is not necessary. It is done in extreme cases (if the vertebrae are broken, the spinal column is curved, there are intervertebral hernias);
  • Exercise therapy.

There are home recipes and methods that reduce pain.
We are talking about alcohol and herbal tinctures and rubs. Available plants are used as a base, for example, plantain or St. John's wort. Author: K.M.N., Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences M.A. Bobyr
