A hip block is a type of intra-articular injection in which an anesthetic drug is injected directly into the joint capsule or periarticular soft tissue. The medicinal composition blocks the pain syndrome. The pain in the joint quickly subsides or disappears completely. The effectiveness of a hip joint blockade injection is very high due to the fact that the drug is injected directly into the lesion, and there is no need to wait for a cumulative effect.

Strong pain
- it is impossible to carry out daily activities, it is difficult to think about anything other than pain, the patient cannot function independently
9-10
Unbearable pain
- requires urgent care, bed rest, disables the patient
Possible complications of the procedure
During an intra-articular block, the risk of complications is very low. However, one should not exclude the possibility of a collision with:
- intolerance to administered drugs, which at best manifests itself in the form of local redness or itching, and at worst can lead to the development of anaphylactic shock;
- the formation of a hematoma due to the needle entering the cavity of the vessel or loss of sensitivity if the needle damages the nerve ending;
- infectious processes that develop if the rules of asepsis and antisepsis are not followed.
Complications are quite easy to prevent if the doctor pays sufficient attention to collecting the patient’s medical history and studying his medical history.
Intra-articular blockade is an effective procedure that allows you to relieve pain if taking NSAIDs or analgesics does not bring relief. If the patient follows the doctor’s recommendations, and the doctor himself is well trained in performing this manipulation, it becomes not only effective, but also safe!
Novocaine blockade of the hip joint
Most often, the doctor prescribes a blockade to relieve pain in the joint. The effect of this procedure occurs almost immediately after injection of the drug into the joint cavity. The patient begins to feel better within a few minutes and the pain subsides.
Novocaine is most often used for such purposes, but in case of individual intolerance, other medications may be prescribed.
The advantages of the method include the high availability of the drug. The medicine goes directly to the source of pain in the joint. The procedure can be repeated 3-5 times if necessary. To achieve the greatest effect, novocaine is mixed with other drugs. After the procedure, the patient is advised to avoid physical activity such as running, jumping, or lifting heavy objects.

This anesthetic is also used in:
- blockade of the sacroiliac joint of the pelvic bones (sacral block);
- coccyx blockade;
- spinal blocks;
- blockade of the joint of the knee, shoulder, elbow and others.
It is worth noting that novocaine is not a therapeutic drug. It only temporarily relieves the symptoms of the disease, namely pain. Therefore, after the injection, the doctor prescribes a restorative course of treatment.

How effective is treatment with novocaine? After what time can I start physical activity? Is a hip block dangerous for a woman over fifty years of age?

Tatyana Good afternoon! Novocaine is a drug used for local anesthesia, its effect is limited to several hours. In addition to novocaine, the blockade contains several other components: hormonal drugs, vitamins, chondroprotectors. Only an integrated approach provides maximum therapeutic effect. All injections are carried out according to strict indications and do not pose any danger of blockade.
Drugs used
It is a mistake to believe that only local anesthetics are used for intra-articular blockade. The following medications may be injected into the joint to reduce pain:
- local anesthetics, such as Novocaine, Lidocaine, etc. (block nerve conduction, differ in the onset of toxicity, method of elimination, and therefore are selected individually for each patient);
- glucocorticosteroids, such as Prednisolone, Dexamethasone, Diprospan (reduce the intensity of inflammatory processes, reduce the severity of immune reactions);
- vitamins from group B (have a weak analgesic effect, are used to accelerate regeneration, enhance the effect of anesthetics).
- Hyaluronic acid preparations, such as Fermatron, Rusvisk, Repart and others (are an analogue or prosthesis of synovial fluid, which provides protection and nutrition to cartilage). Such drugs are highly effective in the treatment of post-traumatic and idiopathic osteoarthritis of any location.
The effect of anesthetics, glucocorticoids and B vitamins can be supplemented at the discretion of the doctor with drugs that can dilate blood vessels or chondroprotectors. Vasodilator medications provide blood flow to the pathological focus, thereby accelerating the elimination of inflammatory toxins and improving regeneration. Chondroprotectors can reduce pain by protecting cartilage.

Possible complications
Blockade injections for pain have a minimum of complications and side effects. Among the possible options:
- Pain at the injection site, disappearing within a short time.
- Intoxication with anesthetics. A rare complication that occurs in cases where the patient’s body is hypersensitive to the drug and when the dose of the drug is incorrectly calculated. The side effect is short-lived, but the main effect of the drug remains.
- Allergic reactions of varying severity. The doctor must be warned about the existing allergy.
Side effects and complications are the exception to the rule in cases where doctors use safe medications in the correct dosage and also follow the technique of administering medications.
How is a shoulder block performed?
Relieving pain and reducing inflammation is the main task of the doctor. The most used and effective is blockade of the shoulder joint with diprospan or similar drugs - dexamethasone, Kenalog, hydrocortisone. Within 10-15 minutes after administration, the patient can raise his arm painlessly. Medicines are administered to the desired point after preliminary anesthesia with lidocaine or novocaine. After the blockade, an aseptic bandage is applied to the injection site.
Commented by Ph.D. traumatologist orthopedist Litvinenko Andrey Sergeevich:
Depending on the disease, a course is prescribed that includes the administration of several drugs. The interval between injections can be from 3 to 7 days. The shoulder block injection must be administered by a physician in a treatment room or doctor's office. The procedure can be carried out under ultrasound control for more accurate administration of the drug.
Advantages of conduction blockades
Today, there are a number of techniques that allow you to relieve pain... However, blockades remain the “leaders” in this area. And all because they have a number of advantages:
- High effectiveness of drugs due to the proximity of the injection to the affected area;
- Almost instantaneous effect of pain relief due to the rapid penetration of the medicine into the affected area;
- Minimum number of side effects due to the absence of drugs entering the general bloodstream;
- The possibility of repeating the procedure and achieving an analgesic and therapeutic effect.
Benefits of blockades for shoulder pain
Drug blockade is considered a very effective treatment. For administration, a combination of several drugs is recommended:
- Blockade of the shoulder joint with diprospan and lidocaine is used most often; this injection helps to quickly relieve pain and reduce the inflammatory reaction. The effect lasts from several hours to several weeks; 3-5 blockades are recommended per course;
- Shoulder injection with novocaine - used as local anesthesia for minor operations or to reduce a dislocated shoulder, the duration of anesthesia is up to 1-2 hours;
After injection, medications act directly in the affected area, depending on the disease, the effect is observed after 3-5 minutes:
- inflammation and swelling of tissues decreases;
- pain in the shoulder joint decreases;
- mobility increases.
The effect of the blockade can last up to 2-3 weeks. As soon as the pain decreases, it is recommended to begin restorative procedures.

Indications for drug blockades:
- Arthrosis of the shoulder joint;
- Arthritis is inflammation of joint tissue;
- Bursitis of the shoulder;
- Rotator cuff tendonitis;
- Tendonitis of the long head of the biceps tendon;
- Synovitis is an accumulation of fluid in the joint cavity;
- Periarthritis of the shoulder.
As a rule, the injection of the drug is carried out at one point where the pain is most pronounced. But for some diseases, they do a so-called three-point blockade, when drugs are administered into several areas. The method of administration and the number of injections are determined by the doctor depending on the patient’s condition and disease.
