Taping the trapezius muscle (upper trapezius, middle trapezius, lower trapezius)

Pain and limitation of movement are the main companions of injuries and degenerative processes in the spine. A set of measures helps to get rid of them: physiotherapy, massage, and, if necessary, analgesic drugs, muscle relaxants, or other treatment that resolves the issue of symptoms and the underlying disease that caused the pain. A very important, and most often mandatory, point of treatment is techniques for maintaining and relaxing the muscular frame: orthopedic corset or kinesio taping.

The mechanism of action of kinesio tapes

Kinesio taping of the lumbar region is performed in a number of cases, both for preventive and therapeutic purposes. It improves posture, relieves pain, helps in the treatment of osteochondrosis, bruises, sprains of ligaments and muscles, helps relieve symptoms of lumbar hernias, and is used to prevent injuries in sports medicine.

Any kinesio tape on the lower back leads to the launch of processes in three main directions:

  1. The attached skin on the lower back is lifted. The pressure in the intercellular space decreases and promotes blood flow.
  2. During physical activity and movement, tapes have a mechanical effect on connective and muscle tissue, perform a massage and tonic function, and improve metabolic processes.
  3. Reducing the tape while moving improves lymph outflow and prevents stagnant processes.

The effectiveness of using kinesio tapes can be increased with the help of various physiotherapeutic and massage procedures. For kinesio taping of the lower back, universal tapes with a width of 5 cm or a width of 10 cm are selected.

CT with contrast

To examine soft tissues, a CT scan with contrast injection is performed. This method allows you to better examine small vessels and study blood flow. A contrast agent is used to distinguish a benign neoplasm from a malignant one, as well as in situations where a study without the introduction of a contrast agent turned out to be uninformative.

The essence of contrast is the use of an iodine-based drug. With the introduction of such a composition, you can see a clear circulatory network in the lumbosacral spine. In this case, an initial scan is performed without contrast, and then an appropriate substance is injected, which makes it possible to analyze the rate of blood filling of the vessels.

Positive effects of kinesio taping for hernia

Once an accurate diagnosis is established, patients are offered surgical intervention. However, it is not shown to everyone. In this case, complex therapy and conservative treatment are resorted to. Among other methods, taping is used for hernia of the lumbar spine as a means of relieving pain and improving metabolic processes.

Positive effects of kinesio taping for hernia of the lumbar spine:

  • pain relief;
  • increased tissue trophism;
  • increased muscle tone;
  • improvement of general condition;
  • improved blood circulation;
  • removal of swelling;
  • acceleration of lymph outflow;
  • limited mobility of the spine;
  • relieving stress on nerve endings;
  • protecting the hernia from external factors.

The application of an elastic band provides muscle tone in this area and protects the pathological formation from stress. Thus, pain is relieved and a person’s quality of life improves.

Contraindications

Sticking tapes to the body for therapeutic purposes is suitable for people of all ages: from infants to the elderly. The technique is used in various fields of medicine: pediatrics; orthopedics, speech therapy, phlebology.

Kinesio taping has a number of advantages, but also has contraindications:

  • Increased sensitivity and skin diseases in the area of application: rashes, dermatitis, tendency to damage. This category also includes old age, when the skin is hypersensitive and prone to injury. Taping techniques can cause bruising, bruising, and other injuries.
  • Heart and kidney failure, ischemic heart disease (coronary heart disease), problems with blood vessels and arteries, thrombosis: acceleration of metabolic processes can provoke the separation of blood clots and atherosclerotic plaques.
  • Early postoperative period and the presence of open wounds and lesions on the skin. The tape is not sterile, so infection may occur.
  • Severe forms of diabetes mellitus and other endocrine and autoimmune diseases.
  • Neoplasms in the application area: both benign and malignant.

Taping for pain and muscle fatigue

Kinesio taping for pain in the lumbar region or muscle fatigue is carried out using the H-shaped technique. This method not only eliminates pain, but also maintains correct posture. The strips are measured from the sacrum to the middle of the back, taking into account the tension. The decompression strip is measured from the edge of the left iliopsoas muscle to the edge of the same muscle on the right. When applying, the person should lean forward as much as possible in order to stretch the muscles well. Vertical strips are applied at a distance of 2 cm from the spine on the right and left parallel to each other with a tension of 30%. The end sections are anchors and are not tensioned. Decompression transverse tape is glued in the place of greatest pain with a tension of 50-70%. Anchors are also applied without tension.

Preparation for the procedure and gluing technique

Before applying the tapes, prepare the skin. The skin is cleansed, degreased, and dried. You can wipe the taped area with an alcohol wipe. Before applying the tapes, the muscles should be relaxed. The application method is selected taking into account the location of the source of pain. To perform applications correctly, you should undergo online training in taping and master the basic techniques for applying kinesio tapes. In this case, the muscles and joints of the spine will be securely fixed and protected, while stiffness of movements will be eliminated. After completing the procedure, the tapes should be thoroughly rubbed with your palms to activate the adhesive composition.

Taping the muscles of the lumbar region during stretching

Lower back pain can occur from muscle strain. There are 3 muscles located in the lumbar region:

  • iliopsoas;
  • greater lumbar;
  • quadratus muscle.

Each muscle performs a specific function. So, the quadratus muscle balances the body. They interact with other muscles of the body: the internal oblique of the abdomen, the erector spinae, and the external oblique of the abdomen.

In this case, kinesio tape is applied at the site of the sprain. The Y-shaped taping technique is used. To do this, a strip 5 cm wide and 20 cm long is cut from one edge with scissors along 15 cm. When applied, the elastic tape is not stretched, but the muscles are stretched as much as possible.

The anchor is fixed in the upper part of the sacrum. One strip of tape deviates 45 degrees and stretches upward without tension, the second strip stretches upward and towards the spine.

Sacroiliac joint dysfunction

The sacroiliac joint connects the sacrum at the bottom of the spine to the ilium. This strong joint is characterized by low mobility and is considered stiff. Its primary functions are to absorb shock and relieve tension between the upper and lower body. With inflammation, hypermobility and arthrosis, the sacroiliac joint can become painful. The pain usually occurs in the lower back and increases with palpation and movement. Conservative methods are used in treatment; taping is carried out to eliminate chronic pain syndrome.

How to apply tape correctly?

Kinesio tapes vary in shape, purpose, and width. They can be rolled, therapeutic, frame.

The skin is prepared for the procedure in advance. To do this, all hairs are removed (shaved) and the surface of the skin is degreased with an alcohol solution.

If there is pronounced hair, a dry method is used for shaving to minimize the possibility of skin infection. Sometimes tape pads are used, which increase the life of the tape and reduce the effect of acrylic glue on the skin.

The maximum period for applying an elastic band is 5 days. After this period, it loses its effectiveness, loses its qualities and it becomes difficult to remove it. If it is necessary to continue treatment, the tape is removed, a break is taken for two days and the tape is reapplied. Only a doctor can determine the exact period.

To make tape removal easier, a special glue-dissolving liquid is used. The tapes are cut using medical scissors for bandages or using special tape cutters.

Taping can be used for a variety of purposes. The longest periods are set to maintain joints. The tape can be used for up to 10 days with a break. To relieve swelling or muscle spasms, the taping time ranges from a day to five. For muscle stimulation, elastic strips are applied a day or three before exercise, for injury prevention - an hour before physical activity.

Taping for a spinal hernia A spinal hernia is a disease of the musculoskeletal system that causes displacement of the intervertebral disc and rupture of the fibrous ring. It provokes compression of the nerve root and a decrease in the spaces between the vertebrae.

Taping the abdomen for a hernia Taping a hernia is a modern method of quick and painless treatment of a rather dangerous disease. The technology appeared more than forty years ago, was used to heal athletes’ injuries, and today is used in various techniques; even a hernia of the spine can be cured by applying tapes.

FAQ

Is it possible to glue tapes at home?

No, only a specialist should do this. He knows how the spine works, is able to determine the dislocation of the hernia, and which kinesiotaping technique is suitable in each case. In addition, there are many tapes on sale that have different composition, elasticity, and purpose. You need to know about all this. Incorrect exposure of the tape will cause deterioration and complications.

Is it possible to apply tapes after hernia surgery?

Immediately after surgery - no. Taping can only be done during the rehabilitation period, with the permission of the attending physician.

Will tapes help get rid of hernia pain?

Yes, taping accelerates local blood flow, reduces the pressure of the hernia on the spinal cord, and relieves the load on the intervertebral disc. All this contributes to its healing. The only point is that the patch cannot be applied during periods of acute pain. Only during remission.

Spinal stenosis

This is a narrowing of the spinal canal in which the nerve roots are located. Stenosis can be localized in different segments of the spine, but as a result of the development of a pathological condition in the affected area, chronic pain occurs, which intensifies as the disease progresses. Lumbar stenosis is one of the most common and is often accompanied by numbness and pain in the legs. Treatment tactics depend on the clinical picture and are selected individually; in some cases, surgical intervention is required. Among the set of measures that are used to alleviate the condition of spinal stenosis, kinesio taping of the back is one of the most convenient and safe.

Causes of neck pain

There are several reasons that provoke pain in the neck (cervicalgia).

They are usually divided into 2 groups: Aesthetic neck taping:

  • causes related to the spine (vertebrogenic):
  • injuries,
  • osteochondrosis,
  • arthrosis,
  • infectious diseases of the skeleton,
  • neoplasms,
  • autoimmune pathologies.
  • causes not related to the spine (non-vertebrogenic):
    • pain caused by diseases of internal organs, radiating to the neck;
    • myofascial syndrome;
    • psychogenic pain syndrome.

    The most common causes of neck and head pain are:

    • Osteochondrosis is one of the most common diseases of our time. The disease manifests itself in the form of thinning and deformation of the intervertebral discs. Increasingly, this disease is diagnosed at a young age - in recent years, the diagnosis of osteochondrosis has been made even at 20 years of age. The main factors that provoke the disease include a sedentary lifestyle, overexertion, stress, and hereditary predisposition. Failure to see a doctor in a timely manner can lead to the development of complications. The first symptoms of the disease are stiffness and crunching when moving the head, a feeling of heaviness in the collar area. If you do not begin to solve the problem over time, the vertebrae gradually become covered with cracks, the inner part of the intervertebral discs becomes thinner, overstrain of muscles and ligaments occurs, displacement of the vertebrae, hernias;
    • Myofascial syndrome. It occurs as a result of overstrain of the rectus or splenius muscle of the neck, accompanied by painful spasms. Risk factors for the disease are: incorrect posture, flat feet, increased physical activity, vibration, prolonged body immobility, poor nutrition, diseases of internal organs;
    • Facet joint dysfunction. The main task of the facet joints is to connect the vertebrae with each other. When a sudden movement of the neck or head occurs, neighboring structures are injured, swelling, pain, and inflammation occur.

    Radiculitis

    Pathological processes that affect the roots of the spinal nerves are called radiculitis. Pinching or inflammation may occur in one place or several. The main cause that leads to radiculitis is osteochondrosis. Other provoking factors include disc herniation, infections, and injuries. For lumbosacral radiculitis and other types of disease, kinesiotaping of the back helps improve the quality of life by alleviating the condition. To relieve chronic pain, spinal taping is performed.
